A British man has died after reportedly being kicked and punched in the head at a popular tourist town in Portugal – emergency services rushed to the scene at around 3am on Saturday morning
A 60-year-old British man has died after reportedly being kicked and punched in the head in a popular tourist town. Local police confirmed the man was assaulted in the Algarve holiday town of Lagos, in Portugal.
He was reportedly kicked and punched in the head in the town’s bar and nightclub area at around 3am on Saturday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene and attempted to revive the man, who reportedly suffered severe head injuries, before he was taken to Lagos Hospital – where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. Paramedics, firefighters and officers from Portugal’s PSP police force responded to the emergency call.
Local police said they are currently talking to a Portuguese suspect, in relation to the case, but added they had not be officially arrested.
A PSP official, around midday local time today, said: “He died in hospital in Lagos following an assault. We have a suspect who is Portuguese who is with police at the moment but I am not able to say whether he has been formally arrested at this stage.”
Another said officers from Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria force were now working on the case and the police focus was on obtaining the evidence needed to take the principal suspect before a judge on Monday.
It is not yet clear if the assault took place inside a nightspot or in the street. Police have not gone into details about the incident although the dead man is understood to have suffered severe head injuries.
