Three people were arrested after a British woman, 78, was found dead in a pool at her hotel in Crete – she fell ill while cooling off at the hotel in Hersonissos

A 78-year-old British woman has been found dead in a hotel pool in Crete. Three people were arrested on suspicion of negligent manslaughter, including a 21-year-old lifeguard.

The elderly woman was cooling off in the pool of her hotel in Hersonissos when she fell ill. She was pulled from the water and given first aid, but emergency responders were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead at hospital.

As well as the young lifeguard, two hotel bosses – aged 51 and 41 – were also taken into custody. According to local media, all three of the suspects have been released on bail.

It comes after a number of tragedies in Greece this summer season. Last month, a Brit tourist was found dead on his sun lounger on a popular Greek beach. The 74-year-old was discovered unconscious on Stalis Beach by other people at the resort.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and made a desperate bid to revive the man, but unfortunately their efforts proved unsuccessful. It is understood he had first gone for a swim before returning to the sun lounger.

Paramedics from Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) treated the man at the scene and no cause of death has yet been given by the Greek authorities.

Just days later, a little girl was found dead on another busy beach by a horrified passer-by.

The child, believed to be around two or three years old, was spotted on Eden Beach in Paleo Faliro, near Athens. Reports suggest a man from Egypt spotted the girl’s body on the shore and called the emergency services.

Authorities rushed to the scene where they located the child, who hasn’t been identified so far. Her body was transported to the Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital via ambulance where doctors pronounced her dead.

A subsequent autopsy revealed chilling details about her harrowing final hours.

A forensic doctor located bruises on her lips. She had endured injuries to the head and body, which indicates she was abused before her death. Some local outlets reported she was “very thin” when she was found.

It is suspected the three-year-old was harmed around three to four hours before she died.
