In a heartbreaking incident, a British couple met their end after their Ferrari spun out of control and plummeted into a river in northern Spain, reports The Telegraph.

Harrowing images at the scene reveal the twisted wreck of the sleek black sports car swallowed by the waters of the Yuso River near Boca de Huergano.

The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon, said officials.

The pair, a 78 year old man and a 58 year old woman, were understood to be part of an approximately 20-strong group of Ferrari enthusiasts on a picturesque drive through the region.

Local reports indicate that the couple was navigating along the N-621 road – famed for its scenic yet serpentine mountain vistas – when calamity unfolded.

Alarm bells rang for emergency services just before 2pm as they were alerted to the accident, confirmed by the Leon provincial council, reports the Express.

Once at the location, the emergency teams discovered the upturned luxury car, partially drowned in the relentless currents of the river.

This prompted an intricate rescue mission lasting six hours, where responders cut through dense vegetation to reach the riverside.

In their efforts, rescue workers had to detach the vehicle’s door to access and retrieve the remains of the two individuals.

Their names have yet to be disclosed and no timeframe for releasing the identities have been provided.

What precisely led to their deaths—a direct consequence of the impact or subsequent drowning—is still unknown.

A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office extended their support:

“We are supporting the families of a British man and woman who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Investigations into the cause of the deadly accident are still underway.
