A British cyclist has died during a race in Majorca. The 40-year-old was one of the participants in the Mallorca 312 event, a famous amateur road race which runs around the island and finishes in Playa de Muro.

The tragedy occurred this morning. The victim is said to have fallen off his bike and gone into cardiac arrest, on the road between Esporles and Valldemossa. Medical responders tried to revive him and he was taken by ambulance to the island capital Palma. He died before arriving at the Rotger Clinic where he was being transferred to.

An investigation into the incident, led by the Civil Guard, has been launched.

Event organisers said in a statement: “We want to transfer our most sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.”

An Irish cyclist died on the island earlier this month.

The 59-year-old is said to have come off his bike after “collapsing” on a road in Pollensa in the north of the holiday island.

He was on the Ma-2210 road linking the popular Port de Pollensa resort to the Formentor Lighthouse.

The alarm was raised just after 4pm on April 9.

Paramedics tried to revive him after reaching the scene but there was nothing they could do to save him.

Scots tourist Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died in March 2016 on a roundabout on a busy road between Alcudia and Port Alcudia after being knocked off his bike by a lorry.

In September 2023 a 45-year-old British cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry on the island.

He fell more than 30ft down an embankment at the side of the road after being run over.

Emergency responders reported at the time he had suffered “very serious” head, chest and stomach injuries when they attended him at the scene before rushing him to hospital.

That incident happened near Caimiri, a small inland town in Majorca at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains which is famous for its olives.
