Geo, known as geoinspain on TikTok, loves the life she has made for herself in Spain. Even though she’s glad she left the UK behind, she admits there are negatives to living abroad

Lots of people dream of packing up and moving abroad.

But, as tempting as it may seem, one woman said there are some cons to leaving the UK. As much as she loves her new life in Spain, Geo, known as @geoinspain on TikTok, said there are some negatives.

Though she’s glad she decided to make the move in her 20s, she thinks it’s important to be honest about her experiences. As idyllic as it is to wake up in the sunshine every day, there are some things that can be challenging.

In a candid video she admitted the work situation “isn’t great”, and buying a house on Spanish soil is tricky too. Even though the average salary is less than the UK, she said the down payments on properties are higher.

Geo added: “I don’t get to see my friends as much as I’d like to. I spend 99% of my day speaking in Spanish, and now my English is rusty. I actually feel awkward speaking in English sometimes.

“Despite living on the beach, I rarely go in summer. I drink more coffee and wine here than in the UK.

“Dating a different language/culture isn’t always easy, and we sometimes clash over trivial things.”

Since she shared the video, it’s been viewed hundreds of times, and people thanked Geo for being “real”. Some expats even admitted they’re thinking of moving back to the UK.

One replied: “I’m literally moving back to the UK. Barely leave the house in summer as it’s too hot. House prices are the same as the UK almost, but with an impossible deposit needed. I’ll miss the beach but.”

Another added: “The coffee and wine is so true. Now that I’ve been limiting alcohol and cutting out alcohol for a while, I can really feel that too!”

A third also replied: “I get it. I was three years in Spain, Benidorm. Not my favourite place. Yes, it’s nice in summertime, but otherwise too many tourist areas, very hard getting long-term accommodation and jobs are hard.”

Meanwhile a fourth had a very different take on the matter, writing: “After 25 years in Spain, I would never go back to the UK. Spain is my home for life.”
