A survey of 2,000 UK adults revealed that 46% of Brits regularly skip breakfast with lack of appetite, time constraints and a hectic daily routine cited as main reasons.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults found that nearly half (46%) regularly skip the first meal of the day, while almost a third (30%) often miss lunch.

The main culprits for missing meals were lack of appetite (39%), time constraints (34%) and a hectic daily routine (28%).

The research, commissioned by Arla Protein to mark the launch of their new Food to Go range, also highlighted the quick-fix foods people resort to when in a hurry.

These include a solitary packet of crisps (35%), a lone boiled egg (15%) and a simple jacket potato (11%). Some of the less satisfying meals consumed included tinned tuna (11%), cold pizza (9%) and a dry baguette or roll (8%).

Young adults aged between 18-24 were more likely to skip a meal than any other age group, with forgetfulness being the main reason (31%). Meanwhile, those aged 25-44 were most likely to miss meals due to heavy workloads (38%) or a rushed routine (38%).

One in three parents (30%) confessed that their busy daily routines meant they regularly missed meals – especially breakfast (43%).

Danny Micklethwaite, from Arla Protein, said: “Brits often find themselves juggling work, life and social commitments, meaning important meals like breakfast and lunch become somewhat of an afterthought.”

“We either skip these meals altogether or make hasty choices which can lack flavour and essential vitamins and minerals.”

The study has shown that missing meals brings about a host of negative emotions: 28% report feeling famished, 27% drained, 15% see a dip in their productivity, and 14% become snappy.

An alarming 63% have experienced decision fatigue, which particularly influences the food choices of 55%. One in five admit to hurried food selections owing to tight schedules, often leading to less satisfaction than if they chose more thoughtfully.

The company’s pioneering range of meal replacement protein shakes aims to cater to the hectic lifestyles of active adults by providing all the essentials of a balanced meal in just one drink.

Danny Micklethwaite remarked: “]It’s clear there are lots of quick and easy options to grab throughout the day, but many of the choices are displeasing and don’t offer any nutritional value.”
