Campaigners are demanding a major inquiry into a deadly “eating disorder epidemic”.
They say warnings about under-resourced services have gone unheeded, leading to more people struggling to get help and lives being lost.
Hope Virgo, who herself survived anorexia, said: “For too long, those affected by eating disorders have been met with neglect and injustice.”
She said it had led to avoidable deaths and “some of the highest mortality rates of all mental health disorders”.
A petition calling for a Confidential Inquiry, a route used to expose failings in NHS maternity care, is being launched.
Labour MP John McDonnell, said: “People with eating disorders are being failed across the UK, with people dying every day due to neglect, stigma and underfunded services.”
A Department of Health and Social Care statement said: “We will fix the NHS and ensure those living with the condition get the support they need.”
