Model-turned-actress Cara Delivingne has always been open about her struggles with substance abuse, admitting it started at the age of seven – but that didn’t stop the cruel comments
Cara Delevingne was quick to put a troll in their place after one claimed she looked ‘drugged up’ during her Met Gala appearance.
She hit back after someone made untrue accusations after sparking concern when she was interviewed on the red carpet. Chatting alongside Ed Sheeran and Stella McCartney on Monday, some took to social media to have their say after a clip of their chat appeared on E!
But one person really got under the model’s skin in the video’s comments. “They’re saving her from ruining the interview because she’s so coked up they had to intervene,” they wrote. Cara saw the cutting remark, and wanted to make sure everyone knew she is still very much sober.
She simply wrote: “Been clear for nearly two years!! Thanks for the support.” Reaching the height of her success in her late teens led the Hammersmith A-lister to delve into a world of excess but would later reveal to Vogue that her childhood trauma had led her to fall into a downward spiral, involving drugs and alcohol.
But it wasn’t until she was caught behaving erratically at Van Nuys airport in October 2022 that she realised she needed help – and she has paparazzi to thank for the decision. “All I knew is if I was continuing to go down the road I was, I would either end up dead or, like, doing something really, really stupid,” she told Vogue in 2023.
After seeing pictures of herself looking dishevelled and disoriented, Cara committed to a 12-week program and hasn’t looked back ever since. Remembering her troubling display, she added: “I hadn’t slept. I was not OK. It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, ‘Okay, I don’t look well’. Sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for.”
When she was 10 years old, she was prescribed sleeping pills to manage her insomnia. She was also diagnosed with dyspraxia – a condition which affects coordination. “This was the beginning of mental health issues and inadvertent self-harm,” Cara continued and explained it led to multiple forms of therapy.
Cara previously revealed her mother’s heroin addiction made her childhood “very stressful”, telling Harper’s Bazaar : “Everyone has something they go through with their family. “My life I feel was very stressful, because there was quite a lot of chaos, not being sure if people were okay or not.”
The Mirror has reached out to Cara’s representatives for further comment on this story.
