Former sporting power couple Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki were set to tie the knot before the Northern Irish golf star brutally dumped her over the phone
Just days after sending out their wedding invites to their nearest and dearest, Rory Mcllroy brutally broke Caroline Wozniacki ‘s heart.
The former couple were together for three years when they announced their engagement in December 2013 – but their romance didn’t last long. The Northern Irish golf player, 35, split from the former world number-one tennis star during a brief three-minute phone call in 2014.
Rory later moved on with Erica Stoll and tied the knot in 2017, but after seven years of marriage, their romance came to an end. It was announced earlier this week that McIlroy has now filed for divorce from his wife, whom he shares a three-year-old daughter called Poppy with.
Since their brutal separation, Caroline has had the last laugh and is now happily married to former basketball player David Lee. She has ignored Rory’s current relationship drama, though was spotted hyping up her ex-fiancé’s best pal’s wife.
Caroline responded to Brooks Koepka’s Instagram post as he shared a loving tribute to his other half Jena Sims. Commenting on the photo of Jena in a bikini, Caroline gushed: “Hot mama.”
The public message sparked a response from fans on Twitter, formerly X, claiming she had ‘lasting rage’. One wrote: “Caroline Wozniacki is celebrating Rory’s divorce on Brooks post”, while another said: “Seems like Caroline Wozniacki is still down bad.”
Caroline was previously set to marry Rory, but they split in 2014 after almost three years together. The pair had frequently attended each other’s events, with the swimsuit model even occasionally acting as her partner’s caddy. However, just months after getting down on one knee on New Year’s Eve, McIlroy suddenly called it off.
According to The Times, McIlroy phoned his fiancée to inform her of his intentions with a three-minute call that the Dane initially thought was a joke. Five days later, he went out and won the BMW PGA Championship, but his comments later about the break-up proved the start of a bitter war of words between the estranged pair.
Shortly after the split, Caroline took to Twitter to thank fans for their support. She said: “It’s a hard time for me right now. Thanks for all the sweet messages! Happy I support Liverpool right now because I know I’ll never walk alone.”
Rory then admitted the split was his decision, saying: “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
Speaking to the Irish Independent in 2017, Rory said: “I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world.”
Caroline is happily married to David after tying the knot in 2019. The couple share two children together, daughter Olivia Wozniacki Lee and son James Wozniacki Lee, and often post adorable updates of their family on social media.
At the end of April, Caroline shared a gushing tribute to David as she wished him a happy birthday. Posting a picture of the two of them with their children, she wrote: “Happy birthday @davidlee you are the best husband and father we could ever ask for! So thankful to go thru life’s adventures with you.”
