Celtic claimed a comfortable victory over Kilmarnock to lift the Scottish Premiership trophy, their third in a row, after a dramatic battle against local rivals Rangers over the course of the season
Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership for the third time in a row following victory over Kilmarnock.
It marks a winning return for Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers as he claims his first title since starting his second spell in charge of the Glasgow club. The former Liverpool boss replaced Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou little under 12 months ago and signed a three-year deal.
Celtic went into the night knowing that avoiding defeat would see them prevail over fierce rivals Rangers in their bid for the crown. It was a comfortable night for Celtic to mark their celebrations in a 5-0 win away at Rugby Park.
Adam Idah put the visitors ahead after just five minutes before Daizen Maeda doubled their lead with just 12 minutes on the clock. James Forrest added a third to ensure a healthy half-time lead.
Celtic were relentless in securing three points however and Matt O’Riley continued their path to the title with a strike from the edge of the area after 51 minutes. Former Fulham youngster O’Riley added his second goal to provide a five-goal lead.
That was enough to earn three points on the night and the Premiership title for another year. But, it was against Old Firm rivals Rangers that Celtic dealt the decisive blow just days ago.
Rodgers side came away 2-1 victors at Celtic Park thanks to a Matt O’Riley strike and a John Lundstram own-goal, as the latter was sent off before the second half could even begin. That allowed Celtic to earn a six-point advantage at the top of the table ensuring that Gers would need perfection and a slip up by the hoops to stand any chance of success.
Rangers earned three points against Dundee to keep their title hopes alive but Celtic swiftly demolished them on Wednesday evening. The Bhoys can now enjoy their final match of the season at home when they take on St Mirren.
Former Celtic forward Chris Sutton was pleased to see the club find more success and singled out a number of players for praise.
He said on X: “Well played Brendan Rodgers and Celtic on yet another title. Special praise for Joe Hart, Matt O’Riley and the classy Callum McGregor and James Forrest. Serial winners who do their talking on the pitch.”
