Singer Charlotte Church’s son Dexter stepped out to support his mum as the pair made a rare public appearance together.

The 16-year-old is growing fast, and looks a lot like his former rugby star dad Gavin Henson as he walked the red carpet alongside her. They were at the BAFTA Cymru Awards on Sunday evening and she was on hand to present the Television Drama Award at the International Convention Centre in Newport.

Dexter is already towering over her and wore a smart black suit to the event in south Wales. Charlotte and his dad Gavin, the flamboyant fly-half, broke up in 2010 after five years together when their lad was an infant. One of the most talented rugby players of his generation now runs a pub in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Voice of an Angel star, who shot to fame aged just 12 with her stunning vocals, has taken a step back from the spotlight since becoming a mum. She now enjoys life as a sound healer on the retreat she owns and told author Izzy Judd on BBC Radio 3 Unwind’s The Music & Meditation Podcast about her decision.

“In my own personal journey, I found that it has been a journey of me believing in my own creativity,” she said. “I think that when you get commoditised as such a young person, you know, my own creativity and artistry wasn’t really centred at all and so it was actually through setting up other things that I really started to reclaim my own creativity.

“But it wasn’t through music, because I had such a lot of baggage around my voice, my creativity, my songwriting, my musicianship, all of that stuff, but yes through creating other things and birthing through other things into the world it made me go ‘Ah I’m really good at this. And I really enjoy it.”

But she hasn’t shunned the spotlight totally. Charlotte is one of the many big names appearing on Celebrity Traitors’ line-up alongside Alan Carr, Stephen Fry, Joe Marler, Jonathan Ross and Tom Daley. The multi-award-winning hit psychological game format will launch begins on Wednesday.

Charlotte and Gavin found love two decades ago but the spark didn’t last; just a few months after announcing their engagement in 2010, the couple called it quits. Charlotte said “When he proposed, I was overjoyed. It was amazing. I really was going to marry Gav and spend the rest of my life with him.

“But then he came back from Norway, and he’d changed, and I’d had time to think. We had both had a change of heart – so we were both of the same mind.” Today, the former flames maintain a friendly relationship, actively partaking in their now-teenage children’s upbringing. Henson found love again and in 2019 tied the knot with his longtime sweetheart Katie Wilson Mould.

He admitted afterwards that the pair had been arguing for some time and knew they had to split for the good of their children, although they now have a civil relationship. After quitting rugby in 2019, he purchased a pub which he now runs with his wife Katie in Wales.

He said: “I was coming to the end of my career and it had been sat here for 18 months, two years. It was not nice for the village and I needed something to do after rugby and to be busy, not to mourn rugby and get depressed, as they say everyone does. But be careful what you wish for, because this is so full-on. We want to feel like we’ve achieved something with the pub. We’re perfectionists. We’re all about the detail.”
