Planning a getaway? More and more Brits are opting for staycations, and it’s easy to see why.

With the hassle of international flights and the charm, history, and natural beauty on offer right here in the UK, there’s no need to jet off abroad.

Autumn paints our quaint market towns in shades of orange, and the countryside offers cosy retreats where you can curl up by a roaring fire.

As the weather cools, England takes on a new allure. The crisp mornings, crunching leaves underfoot, and less crowded streets give even the most popular destinations a warm, welcoming atmosphere, reports the Express.

If you’re looking for a refreshing country walk, unique independent shops, or just a cosy pub for a hearty lunch, Somerset is the perfect spot for a weekend break.

While parts of the Cotswolds extend into Somerset, the heart of the county offers equally stunning scenery without the throngs of tourists. From rolling hills to charming villages, Somerset provides the perfect setting for a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle.

Famous for its cider, cheese (especially its brie), and rich farming heritage, Somerset is peppered with picturesque spots just waiting to be explored.

Frome, a jewel in Somerset’s crown, offers the perfect blend of countryside walks, high street browsing and cosy pub dinners.

This charming town is an ideal spot for an autumnal escape, offering scenic walks, a wealth of independent shops and a reputation as a hotspot for antique treasure hunting.

With its Medieval cobbled streets, artisan markets, and vibrant community spirit – often showcased through various festivals and events throughout the year – Frome has become a favourite among those looking for something a bit different.

Although its roots lie in the cloth industry, Frome’s creative flair has transformed it into a sanctuary for artists, with numerous galleries, studios, and craft shops lining its streets, providing inspiration to passers-by.

As one of the largest towns in Somerset and just a two-hour train ride from London, Frome is an ideal weekend getaway – a fact not lost on Time Out and Conde Nast Traveller.

Time Out listed Frome among the best weekend breaks from London, while CN Traveller named it as one of the UK’s top places to visit this Autumn.

Travel guru Madeleine Silver was particularly enthusiastic about the antiques, writing: “Savvy treasure hunters will mark the first Sunday each month in their diary from March to December, when Frome Independent takes over the centre of this Somerset town with a sea of antiques, vintage clothes, handmade jewellery and stoneware, as well as local beer and artisan snacks”.

But don’t worry if you miss market day, a stroll up Catherine Hill will reveal an array of homeware and furniture that you’ll be itching to take home.
