Experts have shared the most affordable destinations for an enjoyable city break abroad that does not break the bank – with one city in particular named the cheapest in the world

Experts have revealed the most cost-effective destinations for a delightful city break that won’t empty your wallet.

With many holidaymakers keen to save money wherever they can, the company suggests that choosing a slightly offbeat location can make a holiday more affordable and enjoyable, with fewer tourists and plenty of new experiences.

After analysing the average costs of hotels, dining out, transport and drinks, travel luggage storage firm Bounce discovered that the cheapest city break destination is Timisoara, Romania. Situated on the Bega River in the west of the country, a typical hotel room in Timisoara costs around £82 per night, while an average meal out will set you back just £5.

The Romanian city, known for its beautiful parks and vibrant architecture, is also one of Europe’s most walkable cities. Another city recommended by Bounce for its affordability is Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, which is home to over 16 million people.

Known as the birthplace of the tango, the city offers a lively nightlife and budget-friendly ways to see the sights, such as visiting La Boca, a neighbourhood famous for its colourful houses, art museums and bars. However, Bounce advises visitors to take advantage of the incredibly cheap local wine, with a bottle typically costing £2.63, and taxi rides averaging just £0.31 per kilometre.

Another offbeat destination that offers a great value city break is Baku, Azerbaijan, also known as the City of Winds, reports the Express. Despite its location on the Caspian Sea which can result in some harsh weather conditions, Bounce discovered that public transport is incredibly affordable, with travellers shelling out an average of just £0.19 per journey.

Plus, there’s plenty to see, including Yanar Dag, the burning mountain where natural gas has been fuelling a constant fire since the 1950s when it was inadvertently ignited by a shepherd.
