Blood stains on bedding are a nightmare to clean, but Mrs Hinch fans have shared a simple and free hack that will get your duvet cover looking good as new in no time
Waking up to a bloodstained bedsheet can occur for several reasons, like a nick from shaving or graze opening up.
And let’s be honest, it’s a total nightmare having to strip the bed and lose hours tackling those stubborn marks. However, cleaning aficionados who worship at the altar of Mrs Hinch have let slip a nifty trick that doesn’t require you to fork out for fancy products or waste your whole day scrubbing.
The solution is beautifully simple: it calls for just one practically free item. A post on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page shows one distressed woman seeking advice after her other half managed to splatter blood “all over [her] brand new duvet and headboard” when he slept with a cut finger.
Surprisingly, the top tip from most of the group’s members was something utterly basic we all have on hand – cold water. Cold water is praised for its ability to work miracles on not only blood but also food and drink spills like chocolate, vino, and coffee.
For other nuisances such as perspiration, make-up, or grease, the go-to is hot water. Some of the savvy commenters recommended introducing salt into the cold water mix and giving the linens a good soak, while others insisted simply using cold water – or even ice cubes – should do the trick in banishing the unsightly blotches.
One person advised: “Soak in cold salt water. Then wash as usual,” while another shared: “Ice cube. Cold water is magic on blood.” A third person recommended: “Just soak the section of duvet in cold water till it’s disappeared. With the headboard, it will take a little more time. Keep rubbing it with just a very cold water cloth. Soak it as much as possible till it disappears. I wouldn’t put any salt in the water though, because that sets colours in place.”
Some people suggested an alternative tactic using a common fridge staple – milk. As one commenter claimed, milk “takes blood stains away” and can be applied by soaking the affected duvet area in a small bowl of it.
For those preferring specialised cleaning products, suggestions included Elbow Grease spray available for £1.25 at ASDA, Napisan on sale for £3.70 at Wilko, or Ace Gentle Stain Remover costing £2 at Tesco.
