A vital ingredient in nearly every fridge could be swapped for a far healthier alternative, one nutritionist claims

Goat milk might just be the next big thing for improving heart health, according to one expert. Esteemed Spanish pharmacist and nutritionist María de los Ángeles García García, who is widely recognized as Boticaria García on her social media platforms, has pointed out several health advantages of choosing goat milk over traditional cow’s milk.

Amidst a plethora of milk substitutes hitting the shelves, varying from almond and soy to oat, rice, coconut, and even hemp, the debate rages on about which milk alternative trumps the rest. But the question for many remains: why switch from the familiar choice of cow’s milk at all?

According to the insights the expert shared with Salud, goat’s milk could earn top marks due to its nutritional profile differences compared to cow’s milk. She said: “Cow’s milk and goat’s milk have differences in their nutritional profiles. Proteins in goat’s milk may be easier for some people to digest than those in cow’s milk.

“Goat’s milk forms smaller globules, which some people digest better. However, I insist that most people can digest cow’s fat globules without problems.”

This characteristic of goat’s milk may make it an ideal candidate for those dealing with gastrointestinal issues, and it’s something the nutritionist strongly advocates they try. She also left a warning in her message, claiming: “This boom in digestive disorders is because we eat and live increasingly unhealthily.

“If you’ve noticed something isn’t right with your stomach for some time, don’t make anecdotal changes to your diet as they can delay diagnosing a potential condition. Always consult your doctor to evaluate your case individually.”

María’s assertions are supported by scientific research, with studies from the University of Granada revealing that goat’s milk could offer numerous health benefits. These benefits include improvements in high cholesterol and heart health, as well as aiding those with anaemia and individuals undergoing prolonged treatments with iron supplements.

Goat’s milk boasts significant amounts of iron, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which collectively help to tackle iron-deficiency and degenerative bone conditions such as demineralisation. Regarding cardiovascular health, goat’s milk contains up to 40% less cholesterol compared to cow’s milk and is rich in omega-6, both contributing to cardiovascular protection.

Zoe experts have also contributed to the conversation, placing goat’s milk just below lactose-free milk in their ranking of the healthiest milk options. They observed: “Goat’s milk can be easier to digest than cow’s milk. Plus, it’s more nutritionally dense, and it’s high in vitamin A. But the strong flavour isn’t for everyone.”
