Mike Tyson was beaten by Jake Paul in Dallas after Conor McGregor placed a million dollar double bet that included a win for the heavyweight icon – leaving the Irishman out of pocket
Conor McGregor’s $1million weekend double bet is down the drain after Mike Tyson’s loss to Jake Paul.
The Irishman nailed his colours to the mast and was backing the ex-heavyweight champion to get the job done in what was his first professional fight in nearly two decades. Tyson though was dealt a points defeat against Paul in Texas.
Less than an hour before the bout McGregor took to social media to underline his confidence that Tyson would get the win – putting his money where his mouth is as he placed huge sums on Paul, who has only lost once in his boxing career, suffering another defeat.
He tweeted: “My two fight bets this weekend! Tyson KO, Jones Stoppage. $1million double on.” McGregor appears to have since deleted the post.
The result means that McGregor is nearly £800,000 out of pocket and the second aspect of his bet will no longer matter. The Notorious one is backing Jon Jones to make a triumphant return at UFC 309 against Stipe Miocic on Saturday.
Jones is returning after more than 18 months out and will feature on a stellar card at Madison Square Garden. The 37-year-old has never lost in his MMA career. As he faced off with Miocic Jone said: “His eyes didn’t show me anything that I should be worried about.”
The result in New York, from McGregor’s point of view, is now redundant following the outcome at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, where fans stormed out of the stadium.
Paul paid tribute to his opponent, who is 31 years his senior, as he said: ” Mike Tyson, he’s a legend. He’s the greatest to ever do it. I look up to him and we wouldn’t be here today without him. This man is an icon and it’s an honour to fight him. It was tough like I expected it to be.”
Tyson added on the contest: “I’m not surprised (it went the distance). I knew he was a good fighter, I came prepared. I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself. I’m just happy with what I can do.
He also refused to use the knee strap and any injuries issues as an excuse: “Yeah, but I can’t use that as an excuse, because if I did, I wouldn’t be in here.”
Paul also maintained he wasn’t surprised by Tyson: “He’s exactly what I thought, one of the greatest to ever do it. This night is not about me. I want to thank the real heroes, the US military, the doctor’s, the nurses, the nurses in the ER, the cops, the farmers… all the people that make this world go around.”
