The Irishman – who hasn’t fought inside the Octagon since 2021 – is no stranger when it comes to trading barbs on social media with fellow fighters

Conor McGregor has seemingly reignited his rivalry with UFC champion Ilia Topuria after the Irishman took a brutal swipe at the featherweight king on social media.

‘The Notorious’ is no stranger when it comes to sparking a bitter feud with other UFC fighters on social media. The 36-year-old has been out of action since 2021 after breaking his leg in the trilogy showdown with long-time rival Dustin Poirier.

The Irishman was scheduled to make his UFC comeback last year against former Bellator champion Michael Chandler, but was forced to pull out of the clash after picking up an injury in training. McGregor has now been tipped to step foot in the cage this year, but an opponent is yet to be confirmed.

In a few posts uploaded to X – formerly known as Twitter – a few months ago, McGregor traded barbs with Topuria. While it then seemed to have quietened down a tad, it seems as if the Irishman reawakened the beef with ‘El Matador’. The Spanish-Georgian has quickly became one of the biggest stars in the UFC and has insisted that he can sell out a stadium in Spain – in what would be the promotion’s first ever visit to the country.

UFC chief Dana White has previously stated his intentions of booking an event in Spain, but has found issues trying to secure a location. Topuria’s dream is to one day headline a blockbuster card at the Santiago Bernabeu – home of his beloved Real Madrid.

However, ‘El Matador’s’ manager recently revealed that UFC Spain is looking doubtful due to the promotion not wanting to host a stadium show and that the arenas in Madrid were both booked. Despite the bold claim, McGregor had a different theory. In a now-deleted post on X, he wrote: ““He wouldn’t sell it also. No chance.”

Back in October, Topuria sensationally remarked that McGregor wasn’t important enough to fight right now. “There are bigger fights than him,” Topuria told Ibai Llanos. “He’s not the McGregor that moved the masses; he’s a McGregor who represents alcohol and drugs more than sport.”

Topuria’s words found their mark when a McGregor was prompted about a fight with ‘El Matador’ during the Duelbits live stream. “How do you think you’d beat Illy-Illia Abturo, Topturo?” McGregor read a fan question aloud about Topuria. “I’d grab him by the scruff of the chest and slap the little nose off him, yeah. The little ding dong of a thing he is, yeah,” he said.
