A cookbook author has shared her go-to recipe for a healthy soup that she says is the perfect thing to eat when you’re feeling unwell – and people are loving it online

As autumn rolls in, Brits are bracing themselves for the inevitable cold and flu season.

Many are turning to vitamins and minerals alongside traditional medicine to help them feel better. However, another easy way to get a health boost is through a hearty vegetable soup.

Cookbook author Carleigh Bodrug has shared her favourite recipe on Instagram, promising it will perk you up when you’re feeling under the weather.

Carleigh, known as @plantyou on Instagram, posted a reel of her making ‘Italian Penicillin’ soup, and the recipe was a hit with her followers, who dubbed it “the best”.

The video shows Carleigh combining celery, carrot, onion, garlic and ginger with vegetable stock. After boiling and simmering the ingredients, she blends them into a smooth soup. Addressing her 5.2 million followers, Carleigh said: “Have you heard of Italian Penicillin? This is a soothing soup packed full of hidden vegetables.”

She added: “My mum used to make this for me every time I was feeling sick, which is kind of ironic as I’m actually allergic to penicillin. It’s packed with garlic, ginger, and a warm veggie broth, it’s really the perfect thing when you’re not feeling your best.”

Her post was a hit, garnering over 91,000 likes and fans were quick to praise the recipe, with comments like “Love this,” and “Ooh, yummy.”

Another follower declared: “This is the best soup,” while someone else said: “Often made for me by my nonna, who turned 101 on Monday!”

For the complete recipe, Carleigh pointed her followers to her website where they can find all the specifics.

Her post comes after a doctor also recently shared a soup recipe for those feeling under the weather. Dr Hazel Wallace, known on Instagram as @thefoodmedic, provided all the information about her healthy tomato-based soup to her followers.
