Crazy Town frontman Shifty Shellshock’s cause of death has been confirmed three months after the singer was found unresponsive
Three months after his tragic passing at the age of 49, the cause of death for Crazy Town frontman Shifty Shellshock has been disclosed.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner concluded that the effects of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine were responsible, and ruled the manner of death as accidental.
The artist, whose real name was Seth Binzer, was discovered unresponsive in June. At that time, his manager Howie Hubberman indicated that drugs had a part to play in his demise, even though the official cause had not yet been made public.
At the time he said: “Seth Binzer, after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town’s rapid success with ‘Butterfly,’ never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions.”
Speaking to PEOPLE, he continued: “We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here.” Binzer had been candid about his long battle with addiction, including his efforts towards sobriety, which were documented on reality TV shows such as ‘Celebrity Rehab 1’ and 2 and ‘Sober House 1’ and 2. In 2012, he was hospitalised after falling unconscious and subsequently spent time in a coma before being discharged.
In the year preceding Seth’s death, a police mugshot showing him looking drastically different from his time in the limelight circulated online. He was apprehended in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for driving while intoxicated in April 2023, reports OK!.
Just eight weeks before his untimely death, the star took to Instagram to open up about his struggles with sobriety, sharing: “I’m a lover than a fighter …but the one I need to love more Instead of fight with is myself .. mr shifty true Love # Sober alive and grateful (sic)”.
The artist leaves behind three sons from different relationships. His oldest son Halo was born to his ex-wife Melissa Binzer, to whom he was married from 2002 until their separation in 2011. He also had son Gage with Tracy Shelor, and his youngest, son Phoenix, with model Jasmine Lennard, whom he started dating in 2010.
Seth initially met co-frontman of Crazy Town, Bret Mazur, 53, back in 1992 and they adopted the monicker Brimstone Sluggers. The duo later formed Crazy Town in 1999 but split in 2002 only to reunite in 2007 with a comeback on stage in 2009, eventually dropping their third album in 2015.
