Arsenal and Manchester City will both be eyeing Premier League glory on the final day but Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t think the Gunners will be able to overhaul their rivals
Cristiano Ronaldo has confessed he thinks Arsenal will miss out on the Premier League title this Sunday.
The Gunners go into the final day of the season needing champions and leaders Manchester City to slip up. Pep Guardiola’s side hold a two-point advantage over their north London rivals and, should they beat West Ham, they’ll claim a record-breaking fourth straight title.
Arsenal meanwhile are hosting Everton and need a win and then for the Hammers to do them a major favour. Ronaldo, who won three titles during his time at Manchester United, is attending the Tyson Fury bout against Oleksandr Usyk and was quizzed on his thoughts.
He was asked if and when he’ll move to the Gunners but replied: “They are not going to win the league”.
Arsenal were pipped by City last term after they fell away in the final weeks despite leading for much of the season. This year they’ve mounted a far improved challenge and have already recorded more points than they did 12 months ago.
A defeat to Aston Villa last month allowed the Manchester outfit to take control of the title race and they won their long-awaited game in hand against Tottenham during the week to finally take control of the title race. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists their sole focus is on beating the Toffees.
He said: “We have to do our job which is going to be tough because Everton are in a really good moment, so we’re going have to prove again that we can be better than the opponent and win the game. Then we have to wish for the best and for West Ham to have a really good day and help us to fulfil our dream. That’s what we’re hoping for.
Arteta also added: “We have to hope again for West Ham to help us to achieve that dream, but that part is on us and is the only thing that we can focus on.”
Guardiola meanwhile is seeking to land his sixth league title in seven years ahead of making it a potential double when City face Manchester United at Wembley in a week.
He said on the challenge facing them: “We want to experience [winning the title] again, but you have to perform and have to do something to win. How you show resilience in the bad moments against Aston Villa or Spurs for two examples. This is my feeling, consequences.”
