David Beckham revealed that wife Victoria was given special instructions for his 50th birthday. The footballing legend turned 50 on May 2 earlier this year and celebrated in style with family and friends, with Tom Cruise, Guy Ritchie and Gordon Ramsey just some of the star-studded names to attend his dinner party in London.

However, away from the glitz and glamour of parties and holidays, the simple act of gift-giving remains a common practice within the family, with Beckham detailing a particular moment where he had to make a request for a very important reason.

The England legend appeared on the latest episode of Salford City FC’s docu-series on YouTube, which gives fans a peek behind the curtain at the club. He chatted with former team-mate Gary Neville about various topics, with the duo touching on money.

On the topic of looking to the future, Neville told a story about when he moved his pension to a company that could allow him to buy commercial property, before losing it all. The former right-back then asked Beckham whether he had ever experienced anything similar.

“My wife is quite…,” began Beckham, before Neville suggested: “Prudent?”

“Very,” continued Beckham. “I will go and buy her a handbag and I know she’s going to like it, so it doesn’t matter what I spend on it. Then, she won’t. For my 50th birthday, I had to say, don’t buy me anything s***!

“I did! I said, I’ve never asked for anything significant. I want significant for this one birthday! To be fair to her, she did well!”

Beckham’s confession that he never asks for anything major, despite his astronomical net worth with wife Victoria, shows how he has retained his humble nature, despite the notoriety and fame.

David and Victoria famously starred in a 2023 Netflix documentary which, although primarily focusing on the former United man, also showcased aspects of their life together. One of the most popular and funny clips of the series showed the ex-Real Madrid midfielder gate-crashing his wife’s interview to ensure she was telling the truth, evidencing the brilliant camaraderie they have together.

In the video, Victoria had just said that the couple were very working class, to which Beckham interjected, telling her to be honest and tell the film crew what car her dad picked her up from at school. She confirmed it was a Rolls Royce before Beckham simply said: “Thank you” before exiting the room in a comical moment.

With Salford, Neville and Beckham are overseeing a key change at the club. More than a decade ago, when the Class of ’92 took over, the team colours were changed to red – something which was not looked on kindly.

However, it has now been revealed that Salford will return to wearing orange, marking the end of a 12-year period in red. Neville and Beckham completed the buy-out of their former team-mates in May, with a new ownership structure that includes businessman Declan Kelly and former banker Lord Mervyn Davies.

Following extensive consultation with fans, the colour switch has been backed by an overwhelming majority of 77.1%. The club are also working to update seats, cladding and further infrastructure upgrades.
