Deion Sanders’ escalating success in recruitment could spell trouble for the Dallas Cowboys, as the Colorado head coach finds increasing reasons to overlook his former team. Sanders, who spent five seasons with the franchise and secured his second Super Bowl ring there, has been rumoured for a return.
The Cowboys are currently struggling through a disappointing season, standing at 3-7 following Monday’s loss to the Houston Texans.
With the current season drawing to a close, the team is anticipated to undergo significant changes, especially as head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract nears its end. Sanders, a six-time All-Pro, has been suggested as a potential successor due to his achievements at the collegiate level with Colorado and Jackson State.
Since taking the reins of the Buffs last year, the 57 year old has turned a one-win program into a contender for the Big 12 championship and the college football playoff. However, with his son star quarterback Shedeur and two-way Heisman Trophy favourite Travis Hunter heading to the NFL, speculation is rife that Sanders might choose to follow them into the professional league.
Colorado has been on a roll lately, making significant progress in replenishing its roster after several key players and starters declared for the upcoming NFL Draft in April. The Buffs are on the verge of a major coup with Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis, the second-ranked quarterback for the class of 2025, who recently retracted his commitment to USC.
Following Lewis’ move, another top recruit is expected to join him. Carde Smith, also previously committed to USC, has backed out, with strong indications that he’s bound for Colorado. The four-star prospect is considered the 12th best offensive lineman in his class according to On3.
The recruitment drive doesn’t stop there; Colorado is actively pursuing other high-profile commitments such as linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, edge rusher London Merritt, and Michael Carroll, currently pledged to Michigan, Ohio State, and Alabama respectively.
This aggressive recruiting strategy by Colorado is a clear sign of Coach Sanders’ influence in Boulder. Despite the tempting prospect of coaching the NFL’s “America’s Team” Sanders has compelling reasons to stay put and further the Buffs’ resurgence. Amidst swirling rumours about a potential move to the Cowboys, Sanders addressed his future, leaving no doubt about his stance.
“I’m happy where I am, man,” Sanders declared. “I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.”
Colorado athletic director Rick George firmly discarded any doubts this week about Deion Sanders’ future with the school, stating that Coach Sanders is set for a long haul at Boulder. “Deion’s not going anywhere,” he stressed.
Rick George expressed strong assurance in their partnership and Sanders dedication: “The guy is committed here. He’s just getting started, and I feel really good about our relationship and his love of Boulder and our tradition here, and the community’s embraced him.”
