It’s International No Bra Day (October 13) – a day which encourages women to ditch their bras and raise awareness of breast cancer. But it turns out going braless is good for your health all year round

It’s official – there’s no need for us to don bras.

Particularly on International No Bra Day (October 13), when women are urged to ditch their undergarments. This yearly event originated as a social media trend that quickly went viral.

Its aim is to increase awareness of breast cancer, encourage early detection and offer support to those affected by the illness. To participate, simply go without a bra for the day and use the hashtag #nobraday on your social platforms.

However, it appears that going braless can also have health benefits. While many women choose to go braless in October for a reason, it seems it’s advantageous for us in more ways than one.

Sex therapist, Dr Melissa Cook at FunWithFeet and Sofia Gray, said: “Over the years, there’s been a growing trend towards ditching the bra – and for good reason. This month marks International No Bra Day, which means it’s the perfect time to uncover the emotional and physical benefits of going braless.

“Not only can it be empowering to remove your bra but also transformative for many women – allowing them to connect with their bodies like never before. It goes without saying that going braless is likely to be very comfortable.

“Bras, especially ones with underwire, can feel tight, restrictive and even cause pain. By removing them, blood circulation improves, and it allows for a more natural and relaxed posture.

“Many women even find that going braless reduces discomfort and tension in their shoulders and back. The restrictive nature of bras also means that they can trap heat and sweat, leading to rashes, irritation and even infection. Going braless means our skin can breathe and aids overall skin health.”

Moreover, while it’s a common belief that bras are crucial for proper breast support, the expert highlighted studies indicating that ditching the bra can actually strengthen the muscles and ligaments surrounding the breasts.

This results in enhanced tone and firmness. It could even affect sagging, potentially slowing down the process, as the natural movement without a bra helps maintain breast elasticity.

Melissa further stated: “Finally, going braless can provide a sense of confidence, empowerment and liberation. It challenges social norms and allows women to embrace their body and natural shape.

“It also reminds us that we can dress however we like – in a way that makes us feel comfortable rather than following expectations or traditions. This alone can help women to fully relax, which can be a powerful step forward when it comes to self confidence.”

While there are no confirmed direct links between wearing a bra and breast cancer, many women participate in the annual event to remind others to check their boobs. To join in with the online trend, you can also wear purple to show your support.
