The health expert says the supplements can improve your memory and sleep, and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s
A doctor shared three supplements “most people” should consider for better health. Supplements can be a great health booster when our bodies don’t produce enough of what we need.
GP Ahmed Abd Elbary, known on TikTok as Dra_says, said that we “don’t really need that many” supplements to maintain a healthy body. But, he did suggest three that “almost everyone” would benefit from taking.
He said: “The first one is probably no surprise, and it’s magnesium. A lot of people say when they take it, they get side effects, but the key thing is not taking too high a dose.”
He added that “there’s no point taking a massively high dose”. He explained the average person only needs “about 300-400 milligrams in total a day”.
Magnesium has been linked to several health benefits, including better sleep, improved blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease. The GP suggested that you only need to supplement around 200-300 milligrams a day, as the rest can come from your normal diet – with good natural sources, according to the NHS, including spinach, nuts and wholemeal bread
He continued by suggesting creatine monohydrate as another supplement to consider. “A lot of people think this is just for athletic performance and muscle building,” said Dr Ahmed.
However, the doctor explained it’s also beneficial for the mind. He claimed it “helps cognition and can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s”.
Omega 3 was the final supplement he suggested. Dr Ahmed said: “Another fantastic one for brain health and cognition, and again reduce the risk of memory problems.”
He stressed that it is very important for anyone considering adding supplements to their lifestyle to first consult a doctor. They’ll be able to point out any potential risks, and if taking them could cause clashes with other conditions you have or medication you’re taking.
