Doctor Neil Paulvin has been in the business for over 20 years and believes that if people want to have a healthy life, they need to ditch bad habits and opt for a more nutritious diet

If you consume a cup of blueberries daily, not only could your lifespan increase – but your risk of common diseases could decrease.

This comes as a doctor reveals his daily consumption of blueberries to ward off colon cancer and lower cholesterol levels. But the health benefits don’t end there. Dr Neil Paulvin, a longevity and regenerative medicine specialist with over two decades of experience, is encouraging folks to abandon unhealthy habits for a healthier life.

In an article for CNBC, he highlighted one food that people might want to start eating more of: “Blueberries are one of the foods I eat every day to promote longevity. They are tasty, low in calories, and filled with vitamins and antioxidants that protect your body from infection like a suit of armour.”

The expert enjoys blueberries in various ways, whether mixed with yogurt, blended into a smoothie, or simply eaten as a snack. He disclosed that “blueberries have a prebiotic effect that regulates bacteria, relieves gut inflammation, and can help to prevent colon cancer”.

He further explained: “Since blueberries are high in soluble fibre, they help to remove the bile in our gut, as well as things like fatty acids, salts, metals and bilirubin – a substance created from the breaking down of red blood cells. This process can reduce bad cholesterol and also lower your risk of heart disease.”

The humble blueberry is packed with antioxidants that not only protect healthy cells and aid in DNA repair but are also abundant in anthocyanins, giving them their distinctive blue hue. These little powerhouses are fantastic for promoting brain, eye, and heart health, with a single cup providing 16 per cent of your daily vitamin C needs, reports the Express.

Gym enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that they can also help reduce muscle damage and soreness, thanks to the 24 per cent daily value of vitamin K found in one cup, which aids in bone building and blood clotting.

One study involving over 16,000 participants found that consuming blueberries and strawberries could delay mental ageing by up to two and a half years.

The fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in these berries have been shown to reduce inflammation and other risk factors for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
