A viral new sex trend has emerged that sees women turning to coffee to spice up their time in the bedroom – but experts are divided on whether it actually works

Turns out, coffee may have a surprisingly steamy benefit.

An award-winning doctor claims this beverage may be the key to ramping things up in the bedroom – and he’s not alone either. Taking to TikTok on @drsermedmezher, he asked: “How can coffee enhance your forage between the sheets?

“This question comes as women are noticing that coffee makes their bedroom bumpers car explosion [better]. Psychologists understand though for this mattress explosion to happen, particularly in women, it’s less about anatomy and more about psychology.”

In other words, it’s less about the coffee itself but rather its psychological impact. For instance, research previously found a link between drinking this with a reduced risk of depression and even death by suicide.

Its caffeine content sparks an increase in dopamine levels – the neurotransmitter often dubbed as a ‘happy hormone’, triggering feelings of satisfaction which can enhance your receptiveness to orgasming.

In higher doses, coffee can also have a ‘vasodilator effect’, meaning it widens blood vessels and improves blood flow. Arousal and orgasms are strongly linked to the amount of blood flowing downstairs, so better circulation may take things up a notch.

However, more research is needed to establish a definitive link.

In a chat with The Mirror, sexual health guru Sarah Mulindwa at Lovehoney weighed in on the buzz around coffee’s bedroom benefits. She explained: “There’s some scientific evidence that could suggest coffee, or rather caffeine in any form, can improve your sex life. However, the idea that coffee can boost orgasms mostly falls into the category of a viral fad rather than a proven fact, since the connection between coffee and improved orgasms is not yet proven in research.

“Although caffeine often gets a bad rep, it can help increase your level of alertness, reduce fatigue, and improve concentration, all of which in turn could indirectly improve your sex life… Sleep deprivation and fatigue are also linked with reduced sexual desire and/or arousal, so combatting this could help with your orgasms.

“However, the psychological aspect of orgasms is a lot more complex than simply being more alert, so having a coffee beforehand alone, sadly, isn’t going to guarantee you get there.”

Sarah stressed that orgasms are different for everyone and influenced by so many different factors – whether this be our physical health, emotional state, or the relationship we have with our partners.

If you’re struggling, it may be worth exploring different types of stimulation, positions or foreplay to see what works for you. She continued: “Ultimately, a lot of this comes down to communication, if you are looking to orgasm with a partner, but also being in tune with your own body and finding out what makes you tick. Take some time to find this out, and relay this to a partner, or remember for yourself.

“While a cup of coffee might be helpful for some, and endorsed by some on social media, excessive caffeine can lead to jitters, anxiety, and disrupted sleep, all of which can negatively impact sexual health, so go steady with it if you’re going to give this one a try.”
