UK drivers have been warned about a new law in France that could see them slapped with a hefty fine if they don’t comply with the requirements of the legislation
Brit holidaymakers are being slapped with a stark reminder that forgetting to stick a Crit’Air emissions vehicle sticker on their car could land them with a hefty fine while cruising through France. Motorists who haven’t kitted their car out with the badge, which signals compliance with Clean Air Zone standards, could be hit with a £58 fine.
This sum could skyrocket to £155 if it’s not coughed up within 45 days. Even vehicles not brandishing French plates must display the sticker when driving across France. Ex-Olympian and GB News contributor Kriss Akabusi said: “My experience on the continent is that they will fine you on the spot, and you have to get the money.”

Recollecting his own run-in, he said: “I remember once I was going from Germany into Belgium, got fined, and didn’t have the money on me.”
He added: “They followed me to the bank, so they will get their money. Basically, this is just another tax on the motorist.”
Paris plays an even harder ball. Here, drivers need to be sticker-ready inside the A86 motorway perimeter during busy periods – weekdays from 8am to 8pm.
On a positive note, once purchased, a Crit’Air emissions sticker is good for the lifetime of your car, reports the Express.
For a mere £3.17, the decal can be snapped up online via the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition.
These round labels take five to ten days to arrive, ranging through six emissions-based categories. Eco-friendly rides like electric cars get a green sticker and more freedom on the roads.
Meanwhile, those behind the wheel of higher-emission automobiles are lumped with a dark grey tag, potentially facing restrictions or outright bans.
You are required to affix a Crit’Air emissions sticker to the right-hand side of your car’s windscreen.
