New number plates hit UK roads twice per year – in March and September – with new designs being introduced on vehicles registered from March 1, 2025

From tomorrow, over 200 DVLA number plates will be off-limits on UK streets as the new ’25 collection rolls out.

Twice a year, in March and September, motoring enthusiasts see fresh designs released. Vehicles registered from March 1, 2025, can officially sport the latest plates.

However, every six months, the DVLA scrubs away any plates that might raise eyebrows for being offensive or inappropriate – whether they incite controversy over obscenity, homophobia, political issues or religious offence.

From March, a hefty bunch of 210 plates are getting axed, including ‘ST25 ABB’ and ‘US25 WAR’ no longer making the cut. Carwow’s editorial boss Iain Reid said: “The twice-yearly plate-change always sparks some interest in the new car market, as car buyers get a kick out of having a new number plate and many are willing to wait for one.

“Many drivers go one step further to express themselves with a personalised plate, but it’s important to ensure not to cause offence. Car makers and dealers will be out to take a big slice of new car sales with special offers and tempting finance packages.

“So, if you’re looking to buy a 25-plate car, look out for models with finance or low-rate finance deals.”

As per TopReg’s insights, the DVLA’s cleanse keeps the roads respectable and respectful, reports the Express. However, the officials point out this means motorists will be denied a “few funny number plates” each year.

They further clarified: “The decision to ban certain plates is made by members of a DVLA steering group who meet at least twice a year to review potentially offensive combinations.”
