Seven out of ten people want to ensure their next property is properly set up with key eco-friendly elements, such as solar panels, according to a survey of 1,400 homeowners
Homebuyers are prepared to pay a 10% premium for properties with eco-friendly features, a study has found. A survey of 1,400 homeowners revealed that 69% want their next home to be equipped with key green elements, with solar panels, EV charging points and heat pumps among the most in-demand features.
Many homes are currently undergoing a ‘greenovation’ to make them more environmentally friendly, with 58% of homeowners looking to save money in the short term and over two-thirds hoping it will lead to a higher valuation in the future. Data from Rightmove supports this trend, with 77% of homeowners on their platform saying they are willing to pay more for an energy-efficient home.
In the last year, a quarter of households have switched to LED lights, 22% have had a smart meter installed by their energy supplier, and one in five have upgraded their boiler. Additionally, 15% have had insulation fitted, according to research commissioned by Smart Energy GB.
TV presenter and property expert Scarlette Douglas has visited some of Britain’s unique eco-homes, saying: “I really enjoyed having the opportunity to uncover how Brits are greenifying their homes. From solar-powered lighting to rainwater recycling, it’s cool to see the new and quirky eco-elements people are adding to their homes.
Research revealed that 40% of homeowners drew inspiration for eco-friendly changes to their homes from property TV shows and social media Smart meter installation emerged as the top starting point for ‘greenovations’ among homeowners, with 18% noting it led to significant energy savings.
“The financial benefits people see with the help of a smart meter are clear, too. From small steps to the more aspirational, I certainly feel inspired by the homes I’ve visited and the people I’ve met,” Scarlette added.
Victoria Bacon, director at Smart Energy GB, said: “Making eco-upgrades to your home can be easy, accessible, and impactful. One small change – like requesting a smart meter from your energy supplier – can help to kickstart your green home journey.”
Homeowners who added insulation, and installed triple glazing or solar panels, also reported energy savings following their eco-upgrades.
Respondents estimated an average annual energy bill saving of £300, amounting to £25 a month. In a bid to further cut down energy bills, 15% of homeowners polled expressed plans to upgrade their boiler over the coming 3 years, while 13% each planned to install triple glazing and solar panels.
