It is a truth universally acknowledged that any actress playing Elizabeth Bennet must risk catching a cold in a frock on a blustery moor. Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana in The Crown, looks fitting as the spirited sister in this first look at Netflix’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice.

Jack Lowden, star of Slow Horses, plays love interest Mr Darcy, following Colin Firth on the BBC in 1995 and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 film. The pair had to battle the elements as they filmed scenes for the upcoming series in the Peak District.

Netflix is hoping the six-parter, written by best-selling author Dolly Alderton, will bewitch fans of the classic 1813 novel. Olivia Colman also stars in the latest adaptation, alongside an impressive line-up.

Non-binary Emma, 29, called it “a once-in-a-lifetime role.” They said: “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

In the Jane Austen novel, Elizabeth and her four sisters face pressure to marry rich. Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman will play Elizabeth’s pushy mother, Mrs Bennet.

In the 1995 telly version, Colin Firth played Mr Darcy and Jennifer Ehle was Elizabeth. Then there was the 2005 movie starring Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightly in the lead roles, which put its own spin on the story.

Netflix’s latest offering promises to stay true to the book. Writer Dolly said: “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.

“The book is a gift to adapt — packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice.

“With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”

Rufus Sewell, who last year played Prince Andrew in Scoop, will star as the ever-patient Mr Bennet, while Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw has landed the role of Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Stath Lets Flats favourite Jamie Demetriou plays the obsequious Mr Collins, while Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders) takes the role of Mr Bingley – the love match for eldest Bennet sister Jane, who is played by Freya Mavor.

Heartstopper’s Rhea Norwood takes the role of headstrong Bennet sister Lydia while Louis Partridge is set to play the handsome but hopeless Mr Wickham.
