Chelsea got their first win in six Premier League matches with a 3-1 victory over Wolves on Monday night, but goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is again under the microscope after another error
Enzo Maresca defended Robert Sanchez after the Chelsea keeper dropped another clanger.
Chelsea got their first win in six Premier League games even after Sanchez’s mistake gifted Matt Doherty an equaliser for Wolves. It is the fourth mistake leading to a goal by Sanchez this season but the Chelsea boss backed his keeper after the win over Wolves thanks to goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke.
Maresca said: “Fourth mistake leading to a goal? And how many times has he saved us? I think more than four. No problem.
“Mistakes happen to him, to the strikers, central defenders, no problem. Robert Sanchez is doing well. “[Media attention] is part of our job when you make some mistakes. Robert has saved us many times, it happens, no problem.
“If I’m not wrong only four or five teams in the league have conceded less than us. So why [ask about] a defensive problem? I think the balance is quite good between offensive and defensive. Then you can concede a goal in any way.”
“The first 40 minutes we were top. The performance was excellent and we dominated the game. We scored and created many more chances.”
Maresca praised defender Trevoh Chalobah after he made his first appearance since returning from his loan spell at Crystal Palace to ease the club’s injury problems. But Maresca admitted Enzo Fernandez is out injured for a while. Maresca added: “We know that Trevoh was going to help us, We trust him, and the reason he is back is for this. We don’t know yet on Enzo. Probably in the next 24-48 hours we will have more news.”
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira warned Matheus Cunha and Mario Lemina – who was not even in the squad – that he only wants committed players.
Pereira said: “The team that I want was the team which played in the last 15 minutes of the first half of the first half. With confidence, creating problems. We cannot let it happen again that we have two teams.
“It’s normal when a team has doubts about itself. But that is down to me as a coach.”
