Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has seen his future come under scrutiny after a difficult 2023/24 season despite having another year on his contract at Old Trafford
Erik ten Hag’s chance of remaining as Manchester United boss has been rated as 50/50 with the Dutchman’s future to be decided within the next two weeks.
Ten Hag will see his stint in charge of the club judged following the FA Cup final against Manchester City according to the Guardian. A team consisting of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, INEOS boss Sir Dave Brailsford, acting chief executive Jean Claude-Blanc and new technical director Jason Wilcox will assess the United boss’ season.
The former Ajax coach still has 12 months remaining on his deal but has seen his future scrutinised following the arrival of Ratcliffe. Ten Hag has navigated his way to the FA Cup final for the second season in succession but an otherwise deeply disappointing 2023/24 could yet see the club miss out on European football for the first time in a decade.
Speculation has already started over who could replace the 54-year-old. England boss Gareth Southgate has been linked to the role, while it has been suggested the club have made contact with former coach and Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna.
Ten Hag has said he is not currently expecting to depart his role and suggested he would not be saying farewell to supporters in United’s final home game of the season against Newcastle United. “A goodbye? For me? It’s not how I feel it and not how I see it,” he said.
“It’s not the way I will go to start that lap of honour for the fans, no.”
The answers comes days after Ten Hag note the club’s owners ‘have common sense’ and will recognise the difficulties of the season.
“They know that will have a negative impact on results,” said Ten Hag. “Still we are fighting. It’s huge the FA Cup final. We are happy to be there. It can be a highlight for this season.
“We aren’t happy but we know the reason we are underperforming is because of the injuries. No team will perform when you have so many injuries in key areas.”
The Red Devils round off their home Premier League campaign against Newcastle on Wednesday night, before travelling to Brighton on Sunday. A pair of positive results could yet see them finish sixth, while a pair of defeats could result in a finish as low as 10th.
