Switzerland is one of Europe’s leading destinations known for its stunning landscapes, but it’s also one of the most expensive countries – so why not visit a beautiful alternative?

If you’re yearning to visit Switzerland, with its breathtaking landscapes, pristine air and majestic mountains, you’re not alone – it’s a top destination in Europe.

However, it’s also one of the priciest countries on the continent, making it tough for budget-conscious travellers. But there’s a hidden gem in Poland that’s a stunning alternative.

According to Kelly Duhigg, a travel expert and blogger at Girl with the Passport, Zakopane in Poland boasts the “rustic charm of Switzerland without the inflated prices”.

Nestled in the south of Poland, Zakopane is a picturesque resort town in the Tatras Mountains, popular for winter sports and hiking.

Kelly said: “Though just a few hours south of Krakow by bus, Zakopane retains the rustic charm of Switzerland without the inflated prices. Wooden chalets sporting elaborate carved eaves dot steep, cobbled streets between towering peaks.

“It’s a hiker’s paradise crisscrossed with uber picturesque trails. But what makes Zakopane truly sing are its people – a proud folk steeped in tradition.

“Outside any local pub on a summer night, you’ll find villagers singing old shepherd songs to the strum of guitars as children run free. No one locks their door here. It’s easy to feel part of the community.”

Zakopane is also much quieter than similar destinations in Europe with far fewer tourists, even in summer, reports the Express. Kelly enthused: “Whether you’re an altitude enthusiast eager to conquer Giewont or simply want to escape the tourist hordes, Zakopane works its charms with breathtaking scenery and soul-warming hospitality.

“Europe has no shortage of hidden jewels, but few compare to this crown of the Tatras. Consider it my highest recommendation.”

You can reach Zakopane by flying into the nearest airport at Poprad in Slovakia, just roughly a 90-minute drive away, with Ryanair providing direct flights from the UK.

For those who fancy mixing up their mountain retreat with a city adventure, Krakow is an opportune choice, being around a two-hour journey by car or train from Zakopane.

Krakow also serves up as one of Europe’s top spots for a budget-friendly weekend getaway, with plenty of budget airlines offering direct flights from the UK to this Polish gem.
