Reports in Saudi Arabia claim that Al Hilal striker and former Premier League marksman Aleksandar Mitrovic was taken to hospital on Sunday with a rapid heartbeat

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been admitted to hospital due to a ‘rapid heartbeat caused by physical stress’, according to reports in Saudi Arabia.

The former Fulham and Newcastle striker, 30, moved to the Middle East in the summer of 2023 when he joined Al Hilal in a big-money transfer and has been a huge hit with his new club, scoring 40 goals in his maiden season.

But it emerged that Mitrovic has now been ordered to undergo ‘complete rest’ after being taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The news comes less than 48 hours after the Serbia international played in Al Hilal’s 2-0 win over Al Feiha on Friday. Mitrovic was on the scoresheet in his first match back after more than two months out with a hamstring injury.

“It has been a tough two and half months for me, had some problems with my hamstring, injury… after injury,” Mitrovic told SSC Sports after the game.

“I worked really hard to come back… I can help my teammates… happy with the goal.”

Mitrovic was among a clutch of high-profile players targeted by ambitious Saudi Pro League clubs 18 months ago off the back of another fine season at Fulham, where he flourished after leaving Newcastle.

The league has become a hotspot for talent since then with the likes of Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez moving overseas. Cristiano Ronaldo also plies his trade in Saudi Arabia after joining Al Nassr shortly after cutting a second spell at Manchester United short.

After a fine debut season, Mitrovic has continued his fine form this season, scoring 21 goals in total for Al Hilal. They are currently second in the league behind Al Ittihad, who have a four-point advantage in the title race.

Mitrovic scored 111 goals in total for Fulham in 206 games across six years after initially joining the Londoners on loan during the second half of the 2017-18 season.

He has won 98 caps for the Serbia national team, scoring 59 goals.
