Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag back in October as a result of their poor start to the season – but the Dutchman could now be set for a stunning return to football in the Eredivisie

Erik ten Hag could be offered a career lifeline – and an unexpected return to the Netherlands – by Feyenoord.

The Dutchman, 55, was sacked by Manchester United back in October after just over two years in charge and has previously tasted success in the Eredivisie in the past with Feyenoord’s fierce rivals, Ajax.

Ten Hag’s availability has seen him linked with a number of roles around Europe since his exit from Old Trafford, the most recent of which was with Borussia Dortmund. But a move closer to home could seemingly be on the cards.

As outlined by Dutch outlet AD, Ten Hag’s name has been mentioned in regards to the Feyenoord vacancy, though it remains to be seen if he would consider an approach.

Brian Priske was only appointed back in the summer to replace Arne Slot, who left Feyenoord to join Liverpool. But Priske was sacked on Monday with the club currently 12 points behind Ajax in the league.

Appointing Ten Hag would, perhaps, raise eyebrows in some quarters given his affiliation with Ajax and the rivalry between the two clubs. But his pedigree in the Eredivisie, which he won three times in four seasons while in Amsterdam, holds great appeal.

Unfortunately for Ten Hag, he was unable to replicate his impressive record in the Netherlands at United, though he did win the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in his two full seasons in charge.

Intriguingly, Rene Hake is another name in the frame to succeed Priske; he was brought to Old Trafford by Ten Hag as an assistant coach before being moved on following Ruben Amorim’s arrival.

Under-21 coach Pascal Bosschaart is currently in interim charge with Feyenoord set to face AC Milan in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie on Tuesday night.

Director Dennis te Kloese said: “We are glad that Pascal has shown himself ready to step in on a temporary basis.

“I have spoken to many players and staff, and everyone realises that we still have a great deal to compete for.”
