Former This Morning star Fern Britton has opened up about her love life after splitting up with her husband, TV chef, Phil Vickery, in 2020 after 20 years together

Fern Britton has admitted she fears being “critiqued” in bed as she opens up about her sex life.

The former This Morning star, 67, has kept her private life out of the spotlight since calling it a day with TV chef, Phil Vickery, 63, in 2020, after 20 years.

However, Fern has now revealed that she is searching for the “ideal sex” life while admitting she’s worried about potential partners. In a new interview she said: “It’s more [about] exposing yourself to a stranger’s eyes and [thinking], ‘Will I be critiqued badly? Do I want to be critiqued?’ I want the ideal sex, which is romantic, gentle, fulfilling and looking into each other’s eyes.”

Adding that she doesn’t want to be given “accessories to wear or use”, Fern told Women & Home: “And then, of course, I’d have to perhaps go for somebody with a big beer tummy and hairy ears” before conceding: “Well, if I love him, that will be fine! To be seen, that’s what we would all prefer.”

Fern and Phil have never disclosed the reason for their split, however they did say it was “amicable” and they will “continue to be friends”.

The mum-of-four revealed the news on Twitter, now X, on January 30, 2020, posting: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways. We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children. We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time.”

As one of the UK’s most well-known broadcasters and successful novelists, Fern is showing no signs of slowing down in her sixties. However, when she was on Celebrity Big Brother last year, she found herself at the centre of an ageism row with Strictly’s Nikita Kuzmin.

The Ukrainian dancer was accused of having “beef” with Fern after he told the presenter that he liked her jumper, adding: “Stripes are in now, Fern”.

Appearing to take offence at the comment, Fern accused the 26-year-old of “patronising” her, pointing out she still feels like she’s in her twenties.

Speaking on This Morning about the furore afterwards, the novelist said: “It was a difficult one”, adding, “I think he’d already put me up for nominations and he told me that it was because I went to bed early, that I wouldn’t do his gym sessions.”

However, after leaving the ITV show, the pair seemed to have been able to put the tension behind them as Fern told hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best : “I think we misunderstood each other, I misunderstood him then he misunderstood me and it’s all good now, he’s fantastic.”
