Nicholas Denison-Pender, from Perthshire, has been named as the pilot of a light plane that crashed near to Fife Airport, Kinglassie, two days before Christmas

A pilot who died in a horror plane crash near to Fife Airport just two days before Christmas has now been named by police.

Nicholas Denison-Pender, from Perthshire, was declared dead at the scene by Fife Airport, Kinglassie, at 11.40am on December 23.

Police, firefighters, paramedics and HM Coastguard all attended the scene and now an investigation has been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.

The Air Accident Investigations Branch confirmed a probe into the fatal crash is underway. Mr Denison-Pender joined automotive research and consultancy firm SDB Automotive in 2024 as their chief operating officer.

A statement on the company’s website said being a private pilot was his “passion”. He also enjoyed outdoor pursuits with his family and fishing. He joined the company this year having worked at a senior level in business for more than 15 years across Europe, the US, India and Africa, reports the Daily Record.

Andrew Hart, chief executive of SBD Automotive, said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden loss of our friend and colleague, Nicholas Denison-Pender. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Although Nick had only been at SBD Automotive for a few months, he brought an inspiring balance of passion, kindness, and intelligence that made a lasting impact on all who spent time with him.”

Detective Inspector Samantha Davidson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Nicholas as they come to terms with their loss. The family have asked for their privacy at this difficult time. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing and we would ask for anyone with information, to please come forward.”

A spokesperson for the AAIB said: “The AAIB has been notified of this accident and is deploying a team of inspectors to commence an investigation.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 113 of 23 December, 2024.”
