Sky and Virgin Media have both announced free TV upgrades this week.

It’s been a good week for homes wanting a content boost without paying anything for the privilege. Sky announced earlier this week that its customers can now access the new U app which offers instant access to hours of TV including shows such as Gavin and Stacey, Would I Lie To You, Top Gear, Have I Got News For You and Masterchef.

Now Virgin Media is fighting back with its own blockbuster update that also offers a swathe of extra things to watch without reaching for the credit card.

The boost comes via the launch of the Rakuten TV app on Virgin. It’s available from today on devices including Virgin’s TV360 and Stream boxes. Just visit the app store and you’ll be able to download it at no extra cost.

Once installed, there’s instant access to over 150 so-called FAST channels which are all free to view thanks to being supported by adverts.

Channels that feature as part of the update include Top Movies and Action, Entertainment, Reality, Sport, News, Lifestyle, Cooking, Kids, Crime & Mystery, Docs & Factual. There’s even a variety of live TV and exclusive content as well and at no extra cost.

Those wanting even more things to watch can also buy or rent the latest movie releases via the app with movies such as Despicable Me 4, Inside Out 2, and A Quiet Place: Day One available on the platform.

“Virgin TV is the home of great entertainment with a host of must-have apps, on demand shows and popular channels,” said David Bouchier, Chief TV and Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media O2.

“The addition of the Rakuten TV app to our platform gives our customers access to even more unmissable content and fan-favourite films at the click of a button.”

And Sidharth Jayant, Chief Product Officer at Rakuten TV, added: “Rakuten TV offers a great choice for Virgin Media Customers with the premium new releases to rent or buy and a great selection of Movies, TV Shows and FAST channels for free. We are pleased to collaborate with Virgin Media to offer this high-quality experience to its customers. This partnership is a further step in our strategy to bring our TV offer to telco clients across Europe”
