A newborn baby has died after being taken to a Glasgow hospital, with police launching an investigation over the “unexplained” death.

The alarm was raised at 8.45am this morning at St Mungo Place near Glasgow city centre, with emergency responders rushing to the scene.

The baby – who was just five weeks old – was taken unwell in the area, police confirmed. He was then taken to hospital in an ambulance and tragically pronounced dead at short while later.

A local told the Record that there was a police presence at the high-rise flat block on St Mungo Place, where officers had been knocking on doors.

One said: “There’s CID here as well as uniform talking to neighbours. The mum has two other kids. It’s a shame. He was a cute wee boy.”

According to a police statement, the child’s death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.45am on Monday, October 7, 2024, officers were made aware of a baby having taken unwell in the St Mungo Place area of Glasgow.

“The baby, a five-week-old boy, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”
