Brandon Williams, who was loaned to Ipswich Town during the 2023-24 season and is currently a free agent, was spotted by witnesses driving at high speeds and in an erratic manner before crashing in Cheshire

Former Manchester United star Brandon Williams has admitted to dangerous driving after being caught speeding at 99mph before a crash in Cheshire.

Williams, 24, who was on the books of Manchester United but is currently a free agent, was seen by witnesses driving recklessly and at high speeds on the A34 near Handforth on August 20, 2023.

The footballer, accompanied by a female passenger, was clocked driving at up to 99mph in a 70mph zone, with a balloon at his mouth. The woman was spotted filming them on her phone at one point, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Eyewitnesses described the car as being out of control and, around 6.17pm, it collided with a blue Ford Fiesta before crashing into the central reservation.

The collision caused significant damage to Williams’ Audi A3 and also damaged the offside of the Ford Fiesta, leaving it with a missing wheel. The central reservation was also damaged, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Witnesses alerted the police and Williams was breathalysed but the test came back negative. Williams was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries and then transported to Middlewich police station for questioning.

In a prepared statement, Williams confessed that he was behind the wheel of the Audi but denied that the vehicle was out of control. He attributed the collision to the actions of another driver which forced him to swerve into the central reservation.

Williams was asked about the witnesses who saw him with a balloon at his mouth, but he replied “no comment”.

At Chester Crown Court, Williams, hailing from Harpurhey in Manchester, admitted guilt to both offences and is set for sentencing on May 9 at the same court.

Post-hearing, CPS Senior Crown Prosecutor Andrew Madden remarked: “Brandon Williams’ driving on that day clearly fell far below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver.

“Expert analysis showed that he was driving at 99 mph four seconds before he hit the Ford Fiesta. Witnesses said Williams kept speeding up and then breaking sharply. It was clear he wasn’t in control of the vehicle. The driving was erratic and the speed was grossly excessive. Eventually, Williams lost control completely and crashed.

“It is a fortunate no one was seriously injured or killed. To drive at 99mph in those circumstances was extremely dangerous and placed the lives of other road users at serious risk of harm.

“The Crown Prosecution Service wishes to thank the witnesses for supporting this prosecution.”
