Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard is closing in on a return to management at Championship side Coventry City, who ruthlessly sacked Mark Robins earlier this month

Frank Lampard has moved one step closer to the vacant job at Coventry City after holding advanced talks with the club.

The former England international is odds-on to succeed Mark Robins after speaking to Sky Blues’ owner Doug King.

As revealed in Mirror Sport last week , the 46-year-old was among the frontrunners and it appears that he has only cemented that position.

Rivals for the job, who included former Coventry City midfielder Lee Carsley and ex- Manchester United assistant Ruud Van Nistelrooy are dropping out of the picture.

The Football Association has confirmed that Carsley will be returning to his job with the Three Lions Under-21 side ahead of their defence of the title in Slovakia next year.

Chief executive Mark Bullingham revealed after the five-goal victory over Ireland that Carsley would be taking up the reins, saying: “Lee will now return to the Under-21s and will continue to play a vital role supporting the seniors by developing England’s best young players.”

Lampard has been out of management since leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2023 campaign where he won just one out of 11 games after succeeding Graham Potter on an interim basis.

Coventry owner King refused to be make any approaches to fill the position while Robins was in situ and has vowed to take his time over the next appointment.

He has insisted that the current group of players is far better than their league position of 17th suggests with the Sky Blues languishing just one point above the relegation zone.
