Fulham face Manchester United in the FA Cup, two years on from their trip to Old Trafford when Silva and two players were sent off in a 3-1 defeat – having been 1-0 up

Marco Silva insists he will never change his management style two years on from his Old Trafford meltdown.

Silva was sent off along with players Aleksandar Mitrovic and Willian in an FA Cup quarter final at Manchester United two seasons ago. Fulham had been 1-0 up but the nine-men ended up losing 3-1 and they are back at Old Trafford in the fifth round on Sunday.

Fulham boss Silva said: “I learn from all the moments in my career. I try to take something from when I analyse my team, myself, my staff. But I’m passionate and I’m not going to change. It’s impossible to change.

“We all know the limits, the margins. We know what is respect between managers, players with players. As with the officials we all know what this means and the limits are there. But I’m passionate and I try to share that with my players and transmit it for them.”

Silva was dismissed for what he said to ref Chris Kavanagh back in 2023 as the referee watched the pitchside monitor to check on a red card offence for Brazilian Willian.

Mitrovic was suspended for eight games and fined £75K for his reaction. The manager paid £20,000 and hit with a two game touchline ban.

Fulham had to pay £40,000 for failing to control their players and Silva a further £20,000 for his comments after the game on a dark day for the London club.

Silva added: “Emotions are part of a football match, we have to try to control our emotions. Sometimes that is not easy, depending on what comes from the game too, but we have to learn with all the moments.”
