Gardeners are now being told to use a a fleece, Thermacrop or a cloche to cover their newly planted veggies to ensure a healthier growth and avoid unwanted pests attacking their fresh produce.
There’s one important task gardeners should do when thinking of planting some fruits and vegetables in the garden. Planting your produce comes with a lot of benefits, such as making your own food and saving tons of money, as well as getting you outdoors and doing some physical activity. It can also reduce stress, enhance your mood and have an increase of productivity.
The most popular vegetables to grow in the UK are potatoes, radishes, sprouts, courgettes and broccoli. Not only are they easier to maintain, but they also adapt well to colder and rainy weather.
Nonetheless, now that spring has sprung and the gardening season has started, there’s one important task to complete to ensure a healthy growth.

According to Which?, after planting vegetables, gardeners should cover newly planted vegetables with fleece, Thermacrop or a cloche. This will help keep them off the cold and get the warmth of the sun near the plants.
For those using a fleece, make sure it weighs between 20lb and 33.5lb so it’s less likely to grip. Using bricks or large stones around the edges can also be helpful to make it stay in place.
The months of April and May are great months for gardening, as it marks the beginning of the growing season. It gives the opportunity for gardeners to sow seed and plant various plants, flowers and vegetables. In the UK, these include beetroot, carrots, peas, lettuce, and spinach.
In preparation for the growing season, it’s important to be aware of the weather changes. Covering the vegetables also provides shade and reduces the stress on plants during hot weather, as they might be dehydrated.
This can also be done by checking that the soil is well-drained and enriched with nutrients or organic matter. By doing this, not only will it ensure that vegetables grow beautifully, but it will also keep them away from any unwanted pests that might damage them.
For example, pigeons are known to aim at broccoli, sprouts, cauliflowers and cabbages, as well as fruits like blackcurrants. By covering it, it will stop these unwanted pests from ‘eating’ your fresh produce.
As these months seem to be promising with nice weather ahead, gardeners should now take the advantage to make as much produce as possible, whilst keeping their outdoor places clean, organised and ready for the summer months.
