If you’re growing tomatoes this spring then rest assured there’s a cheap fool proof way to ensure they turn out delicious and juicy. With the warmer weather and longer, brighter days, many of us are trying our hand at gardening. And there are few better plants to start flexing our green thumb with than tomatoes.

Not only are they easy to grow, they make a healthy, versatile and delicious food source, perfect for all kinds of cuisines, ranging from Italian to Indian. Originating in South America, tomatoes have become one of the globe’s most beloved fruits. Known for their meaty, tart taste, they make the perfect base for many different curries, pasta sauces and salads.

Plus, they’re also incredibly good for you. Tomatoes are bursting with vitamin C, which is known for boosting immunity and helping create healthy skin.

While tomatoes are best-suited to warmer climates, they can be a great addition to the British garden. If you’re growing them in winter, they’re best kept in a greenhouse. However, as we come into spring and summer, you can grow them outside.

Another incentive to grow them at home is that they will likely taste better than the ones grown in the supermarket. This is because long import times can hugely affect the quality of the fruit.

Equally, you can avoid spraying them with nasty pesticides that both affect taste and the healthiness of the food. In 2024 , the Environmental Working Group identified them as supermarket produce containing some of the highest levels of pesticides.

Of course, if you’re putting effort into growing your tomatoes, you want to guarantee that they taste nice. There’s nothing worse than biting into a crunchy, flavourless fruit.

The quality of the soil makes a massive impact on the taste of the tomato. This is because the wrong soil won’t allow it to absorb all the nutrients it needs to grow to its potential.

But before you turn around and buy an expensive fertiliser, there is an easy, cheap way to improve your tomato’s taste. Even better, you likely already have it at home.

According to Good Housekeeping, adding baking soda to the soil can make tomatoes sweeter. This is because it reduces soil acidity and makes it easier for tomatoes to absorb nutrients.

The best way to implement this hack is to lightly sprinkle baking soda around each tomato plant once they begin to appear. Then repeat this process once they are halfway grown.

Although, be advised to be careful with how much baking soda you use. Adding too much may inadvertently poison your tomato plant, sending you back to square one.

Most of us likely have baking soda to hand. However, if not, don’t worry. You can pick up baking soda in Asda for a bargain 65p.
