Salford City fans have decisively backed a return to their traditional orange kit after overwhelmingly rejecting the red colours introduced more than a decade ago. The club will switch back to their historic tangerine strip for next season, marking the end of a 12-year experiment that sparked fierce opposition from supporters.

The controversial colour change came into effect when the star-studded consortium, featuring former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs, took control of the non-league outfit alongside Singaporean tycoon Peter Lim.

The switch to red triggered furious protests from the terraces, with fans chanting “We are Tangerine” during matches as rumours of the alteration circulated. Some supporters even boycotted the inaugural fixture under the new regime in protest at the decision.

David Beckham joined the ownership ranks in 2019 after acquiring 10 per cent of Lim’s holding, while Gary Neville acquired the Singaporean’s entire stake last summer.

The duo completed a buyout of their former Old Trafford teammates in May, spearheading a new ownership structure that includes businessman Declan Kelly and former banker Lord Mervyn Davies.

Neville is now undoing one of the initial choices made over ten years ago, with supporters backing the heritage switch by a commanding 77.1% margin following extensive consultation.

The club has also announced “significant work to be undertaken at the Peninsula Stadium to update cladding and seats, among other infrastructure upgrades that are already due to take place” ahead of the new campaign.

They further state that “this landmark choice will evolve the Club into a bold, new era by combining our tangerine heritage with modern style to create a striking orange identity”.

Salford also announced that “a further consultation with supporters will take place about the Club crest”, which changed alongside their colours.
