The nation is in the process of deciding on its ruling party – but not without the company of a few dogs, as adorable photos from polling stations around the country have shown

Voters are out in their thousands today as the historic general election gets under way – and many have taken their dogs along to the polling stations.

People up and down the country are casting their votes that could see the end of 14 years of Tory rule. Political leaders from all parties were seen at their local polling stations, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Following a change in the law, those who cast their ballot in person must bring valid photo ID – but no such ID is needed for any dogs who came along for the experience. While many dog owners brought just one to the polling stations, dozens of hounds were pictured outside Meonstoke Village Hall in Windsor as members of the hunt were inside voting during their daily walk.

Elsewhere, in St James’ Church, Goldenacre in Edinburgh it was all too much for one Shih Tzu who was spotted waiting outside in a pram. While in Devon, one voter outsized every other pet owner and brought along their horse.

Polling stations opened at 7am will close at 10pm tonight. If you are in the queue outside your polling station by 10pm you will still be allowed to vote. But if you arrive after 10pm you won’t be able to cast a ballot.
