There’s nothing worse than a yolk that’s too runny or a snotty egg white, so if you’re having trouble frying the perfect egg follow this incredibly simple kitchen hack

Fried eggs are a popular breakfast staple – but no matter how often you cook them it can be difficult to achieve a perfect result every time. Most people are particular about how runny they like their yolk to be, or the consistency of the egg white. Luckily, this one simple ingredient can help you get consistently tasty results.

Eggs are one of the best foods you can eat, especially in the morning. Their high protein count and versatility means that they can be incorporated into all kinds of breakfasts, from big fry ups to less calorific options like avocado toast.

Fried eggs in particular are commonly enjoyed with buttered toast, as part of a full English, or even on their own. It’s also one of the quickest and easiest ways to cook eggs. Methods such as boiling require a higher wait time and poaching uses a specific technique that can be difficult to master.

However, this doesn’t mean that frying can’t go wrong. If you crack your egg too harshly, you risk splitting the yolk. Plus, if the white part of the egg starts to run in multiple directions you can end up with a very funny-shaped breakfast. Even worse, if the white spreads too thin or the oil is too hot, it usually results in a rubbery, burnt taste.

Luckily, the TikTokker Lindsay posted a video resharing her “viral” egg hack. She explained that since she was constantly receiving comments from people saying they loved the results from her trick, she wanted to share it again for those who haven’t seen it before.

The simple tip – a dash of water

She reiterated that she didn’t come up with the hack herself and people have been cooking eggs this way “for years”, but given that many people don’t seem to know about it, she wanted to share it with the world. Lindsay told her viewers that for perfect fried eggs all you have to do is crack your eggs into a frying pan with no oil, and add “a dash of water”. Then you simply place a lid over the pan and leave the eggs to cook.

By using this method, it prevents the edges of the egg becoming burnt, crispy or weirdly shaped. Plus, putting a lid on top also helps cook the top and bottom evenly – meaning you won’t be left with undercooked whites or an overly runny yolk. The commenters praised Lindsey for her trick. One user said: “I now do them this way. Thank you! Perfect every time.” Another wrote: “I always thought you had to flip them! I need to try this.”
