Maybelline debuted its newest mascara on Gigi Hadid at this year’s Met Gala, and it promises full-impact volume and 24hr wear. Beauty editor Laura Mulley has been trying it out…

The Met Gala 2024 was full of memorable beauty moments, from Zendaya’s pencil-thin brows to Sydney Sweeney’s black bob transformation. One look is a little more wearable for us non-celebs – and will cost you as little as £10.

Gigi Hadid’s pretty, old-Hollywood-glamour make-up look of a red lip and soft winged eyeliner was completed with a coat of Maybelline’s latest launch, Lash Sensational Firework Mascara. This latest formula from the makers of the bestselling Sky High Mascara features a spiral-shaped silicone brush (inspired by a Catherine wheel, perhaps?) and weightless formula to give a 360º volume and flared-out lash effect.

It’s available in a regular and a waterproof version, and it’s available to buy from all the big beauty retailers, including LookFantastic, Boots and Superdrug. It usually retails for £12.99, however we’ve currently spotted it on sale for £10.35 at Amazon.

Beauty editor Laura Mulley has been testing it out:

“Maybelline’s Sky High Mascara – in particular the Cosmic Black version – is one of my all-time favourite mascaras, so I was interested to see how this latest addition to the Lash Sensational family would compare.

“I really like the brush of the Firework mascara; it’s bendy and spiky enough to get right in between the lash hairs and splay them out. The formula itself is very easy to apply too – it’s quite a ‘wet’ texture that glides on smoothly, then dries quickly to reduce the chance of smudging.

“The result is a really decent amount of volume, length and fanning out without the lashes clumping together, and eyelashes still feel soft to the touch, even when dry (unlike Sky High, which locks them solidly in place). It also removes fairly easily with cleansing balm or eye make-up remover at the end of the day. Out of the two, I prefer the waterproof formula for its longevity.

“Overall if you’re looking for soft, fluffy volume without any chance of spidery, clumpy lashes, I think you’ll love this new Maybelline Mascara.”

I you like this effect but prefer a bristle brush, we think you’ll love NARS Climax Mascara, currently £21.20, or for even more impact, try YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara, £29 (it’s also available in blue).
