When a 16-year-old girl came home from school and her older brother allegedly told her he’d done “something bad”, she had no idea of the horror awaiting her.

The schoolgirl is said to have followed multiple blood trails to the bathroom of her home, where she found her mum’s boyfriend decapitated in the tub with a knife still in his neck.

The shocking story emerging from the US tells how officers from NYPD responded to a 911 call from the house in the West Brighton area of Staten Island, New York.

Shocked sources told the New York Post the 45-year-old victim’s head had been chopped off in a frenzied attack, with multiple stab wounds to his head and neck. The man was a sanitation worker nearing retirement due to his severe vision loss, making him a vulnerable target.

His girlfriend’s 19-year-old son was arrested at the scene after his sister called police at 4.30pm on Monday. The boy is said to have a long history of mental health issues, and apparently told his younger sister he “did something bad” when she came home from school.

The family are said to have had a history of domestic incidents but a neighbour, Mariano Castro, had never spotted anything amiss between the dead man and his girlfriend’s son. The 36-year-old said he had seen the pair in the backyard of their home, mowing the lawn and grilling on the barbecue.

“I never saw them fighting each other, so that’s completely crazy. That’s all I can say,” said the construction worker.

The victim’s friend Louis Ortiz, 47, described his pal as the “nicest man in the world”. “He was easygoing,” he said. “He was a good person. He did anything for anybody. He’d take his shirt off his back and give it to you if you needed it.”

“I can’t even believe I was looking at my friend’s house on the TV screen,” added the pal, who said his dead friend had loved to go fishing. “And I had to get up and run over here because I didn’t want to believe that it was true until I saw it with my eyes.”

Louis revealed the son had been battling with his mental health, with numerous issues happening at school, saying he felt more help should be given to people in crisis.

The troubled teenager has been taken into custody, with neighbours reporting seeing him being brought of the house by police with blood on his shoes. Investigators in protective suits were seen entering the home to investigate the blood soaked scene.

NYPD continues to investigate the man’s death.
