Gordon Ramsay has shared his recipe for a ‘super simple’ apple crumble which he says is perfect for autumn and will get you in the mood for those cosy nights in

As the leaves turn and the weather cools, it’s the perfect time to indulge in some comforting autumnal dishes.

This is the season when home cooks spend their evenings whipping up hearty meals like stews and pasta dishes. But Apple crumble is a favourite dessert, with its soft yet slightly tangy apples baked under a buttery, crumbly topping.

Gordon Ramsay has declared his apple crumble recipe as the ideal autumn treat, saying it will “get you in the mood for those cosy nights in” and is also great for using up seasonal fruits. In an online video, Gordon said: “My next recipe is a proper British classic, that is super simple to cook, and costs next to nothing [to bake], a delicious apple crumble.”

He added: “Crumbles are the perfect way to use fruit when it’s in season, there’s lots of it about, it’s nice and cheap, but most importantly the fruit is at its absolute best.”

How to make Gordon Ramsay’s autumn apple crumble

Ingredients

For the apple filling:

  • Six apples, cored but not peeled. Three apples cut into chunks, three apples grated
  • Six tablespoons of caster sugar
  • One vanilla pod, seeds only
  • Zest of one lemon
  • Lemon juice
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Three tablespoons of dried cranberries

For the crumble topping:

  • 100g of plain flour
  • Two tablespoons of demerara sugar
  • 50g of butter
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Four tablespoons of nutty granola or muesli

Kitchen equipment:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Stove-proof and oven-proof baking dish

Method

Start by preheating your oven to 200?C/Gas 6. Grab a stove-proof baking dish, add the caster sugar and heat it on the hob for five minutes until it turns into caramel. Next, throw in the cinnamon, vanilla seeds and three grated apples, then bake for about two minutes.

Gradually stir in the apple chunks, followed by the cranberries, lemon zest and juice. Take the dish off the heat and set it aside. To whip up the crumble topping, chuck flour, sugar, butter and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and rub together with your fingers until it’s crumbly and looks like breadcrumbs.

Add your nutty granola or muesli to the mix and keep rubbing until it’s fully combined. Now, take your baking dish with the apple filling and sprinkle the crumble on top. Heat it again on the hob until it starts to bubble.

Pop it in the oven and bake for around 12 to 14 minutes until it’s a deep golden colour. Once it’s ready, take it out of the oven and your warm apple crumble is ready to be served.
